SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Athletics Department held its annual awards banquet on Tuesday, May 9 in celebration of its student-athletes and their many successes throughout the 2016-17 academic year and athletic seasons.
At the event, Director of Athletics Matt Richards recognized noteworthy Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) and United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) accomplishments that included:

Richards also acknowledged milestones and new record holders that were plentiful across each season. In the fall, Brian Dougher earned his 100th win as Head Coach of the men’s soccer program as Hannah Fields became the women’s soccer all-team points leader notching 57 in her two-year career. At this year’s USCAA basketball tournament, Jennifer Conrad recorded 14 made field-goals and Chase Soares with 14 assists, both new single-game tournament records. Lastly and in this spring season, Kaylah Abdul finished her rookie campaign ranked first in four USCAA softball categories—batting average (.597), runs-batted-in (46), on-base percentage (.636), and slugging percentage (.970).
To conclude the ceremony, SMCC Athletics named the recipients of its department awards.
Donald Ferrante Award- Most Improved Athlete (Male and Female)
To the most deserving student-athletes who showed strong traits of determination, improvement, and commitment to their teammates.
Recipients: Bronson Kieltyka and Dani Goodwin
Carroll Rines Award- Sports Person of the Year (Male and Female)
To the most deserving student-athletes who demonstrated a high level of dedication and commitment to their team and the athletic department overall, image and success are strong factors.
Recipients: John Morgan and Vanese Barnes
Timothy D. Hagerman Scholarship
Given to a returning men’s basketball player who puts his team before himself and is a positive member of the school community.
Recipient: Anderson Kavutse
John Dakin Award- Outstanding Contribution
Given to a non-student-athlete who gave of their time to promote SMCC Athletics. Someone who volunteered or gave of themselves above and beyond what the expectation might have been.
Recipient: Coach AJ Burton
