SeaWolves Baseball Sweeps In Home Opener

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team defeated the Mustangs of Central Maine Community College (CMCC) in both games of a Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) doubleheader on Wednesday, Sept. 13.

Game 1: W, 8-1

Head Coach Jordan Yanni turned to first-year Dylan Francoeur (Westbrook, Maine) who put together a masterful performance tossing six complete innings, allowing just five hits and one run on his way to his first win of his collegiate career.

Junior Edgar Montan (Santiago, Dominican Republic) put his team on the board in the second inning with a two-out RBI single that scored junior Sean Adams (Lebanon, Maine). The Mustangs' Matthew Tremble would push one across in the bottom half of the inning to even the score 1-1.

It was all SeaWolves from then on. Both Adams and sophomore Nathaniel Cyr (Freeport, Maine) collected two RBI in the game. Francoeur from the nine-hole and sophomore Cody Bryant(Somersworth, N.H.) from the lead-off spot teamed up for four hits as SMCC cruised to a seven-run victory.

Game 2: W, 3-1

First-year James Parisi (Rockport, Mass.) started on the bump for SMCC in game two, opposite him was Damien St. Pierre. With runs something of a premium, Parisi threw five innings of one-run baseball—he too winning his first collegiate decision. Adams came on in relief and struck out two to notch the save.

Junior Carter Chabot (Lewiston, Maine) laced a double to score two in the first frame and that proved to be all the SeaWolves needed. For good measure, Bryant drove another in on a ground out to the second baseman in the second inning to extend the SMCC lead to 3-0.

CMCC would answer, again with Tremble, but to no avail as SMCC would hold on to win this one 3-1 and complete the sweep.

SMCC pitching allowed just two runs, none earned, to CMCC bats in 14 innings of play.

In a post-game interview, Coach Yanni commented, "This team is fun to watch defensively and at the plate. The chemistry in the dugout is at a high—it's a 'do your job' mentality. We've let go of the individual result and made the end result the focus. This is the culture we need to build on."

SMCC climbs atop the YSCC standings sporting a 4-0 record, CMCC falls to 1-3 in conference play.

The SeaWolves continue their home stand when they host the Lynx of New Hampshire Technical Institute (NHTI) on Saturday, Sept. 16 in another YSCC double dip beginning at 12 p.m. Cumulative of the previous five seasons, SMCC owns a 15-3 record against NHTI at home.
