AUBURN, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men’s basketball team fell to Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) rivals Central Maine Community College (CMCC) 79-68 in its final regular season bout on Monday, Feb. 12.

The SeaWolves clung to a one-point lead going into the half getting eight points from both Dylan Silvestri (Pelham, N.H.) and Ryan Cloutier (Pelham, N.H.) and 10 rebounds from first-year Oumar Keita (Bridgeport, Conn.).

First-year Gregory Trinidad (Lawrence, Mass.) scored a layup on a steal off an inbound to put the SeaWolves up 65-62 with three minutes remaining. CMCC’s Elijah Barbour buried back-to-back threes to answer as part of a 15-0 run to seal the victory as time expired.

In a game that featured 10 lead changes and six ties, SMCC outrebounded the opposition by an astounding 56-26 and commanded the key with 32 points in the paint. The key to the Mustang victory was their ability to hit timely shots from beyond the arc as part of 12-24 from distance. The SeaWolves attempted 30 three-pointers, connecting on seven, and went 11-20 from the free throw line.

Trinidad flushed six three pointers on his way to 21 points in the game. Silvestri posted a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore Anderson Kavutse (Westbrook, Maine) contributed 10 rebounds and nine points on 50 percent shooting.

Barbour led all scorers in the contest with 23, making 7-10 from three. Josh Chery and Corey David also finished in double figures for the Mustangs with 16 and 10.

The SeaWolves will await the result of tonight’s College of St. Joseph (Vt.) vs. Vermont Technical College to play either #5 University of Machias or #6 Unity College in the quarter-final round of the YSCC Elite 8 Tournament in Concord, N.H. on Friday, Feb. 16. Game time TBA.

CMCC locks up the #2 seed to match up with #7 University of Maine at Augusta.
