SMCC Athletics inducts Hall of Fame class of 2023
CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine—Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Athletics enshrined three individuals to its Hall of Fame class of 2023 on Friday, May 10.
CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine—Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Athletics enshrined three individuals to its Hall of Fame class of 2023 on Friday, May 10.
Amos Herrin, Anna Allard, and John Morgan joined an elite group of 47 other individuals and two teams for their accomplishments on the playing surface and for their service to the College community.
The 18th annual induction was held at Purpoodock Golf Club met with friends and family of the inductees in addition to support staff from the College. SMCC President Dr. Kristen Miller provided a welcome and Associate Dean of Athletics and Alumni Affairs Matt Richards emceed the event among video tributes by former department coaches, and speeches delivered by the honored inductees.
Richards summed up the evening by stating, “It’s one of my favorite events of the year to bring back former athletes, coaches, and supporters of the department, in celebration of truly special accomplishments. Amos, Anna, and John have achieved the highest level of recognition by the department, and exemplify the very best of our student-athletes and coaches. For me, the reflection and impact of the ceremony is unmatched. Special thanks to the Seawolves Athletic Club, the Hall of Fame Committee, and the staff at Purpoodock Golf Club for their support in making this event a success!”
Amos Herrin (Baseball ’18)
A three-year member of the baseball program (2015-18) and a three-time Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) champion. Amos Herrin contributed as a starting pitcher and as an exceptional shortstop— he was voted a two-time All-Conference selection and YSCC Pitcher of the Year in 2018. Herrin was dominant in post-season play at the plate and in the field, namely as Offensive Player of the Tournament (’17) and Tournament MVP (’18). Herrin was both a First Team United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) All-American and an Academic All-American in 2018, and led the nation in strikeouts (108) and k/9 (13.82) in the same season. During his time at SMCC, Herrin racked up 178 career strikeouts (2nd all-time) spanning 147.0 innings pitched and 10.9 k/9 (1st all-time). As a hitter, he totaled a .317 career average in 208 at-bats. Herrin was selected to the YSCC Twin Decades Team, a collection of the most talented players since the inception of the conference.
Today, Herrin works as an electrician here in Maine.
Anna Allard (Softball ’15)
A two-year member of the softball program (2014-15), Anna Allard led her team to a YSCC championship in 2014. She was named to the All-Conference team in both seasons, and voted a USCAA Honorable Mention All-American in 2014. In addition to the hardware, the shortstop logged a career .443 batting average, a .495 on-base percentage, and a .695 slugging percentage. Allard recorded 77 hits, 32 extra-base hits, 30 RBIs and 61 runs spanning 174 at-bats.
A resident of West Bath, Allard services the Falmouth Fire and EMS Department as Lieutenant Paramedic.
John Morgan (Men’s Basketball ’17)
A three-year member of the men’s basketball program (2014-17), John Morgan achieved both regional and national recognition as a YSCC champion (’17), and a USCAA National Tournament participant (’15, ’17). The small forward was named First Team All-Conference, YSCC Player of the Year, conference Tournament MVP, and a First Team All-American in the same season. Morgan captained the program for two seasons and was honored with the department’s Carrol Rines Sports Person of the Year award in 2017.
The Maine native transferred to Thomas College to continue his playing career and achieve 1,000 career points. Morgan continues to service the basketball community as the Head Varsity Basketball Coach at Noble High School.
