SMCC Athletics Thanks Ben Gravel for His Contributions to Seawolves Baseball
SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – Southern Maine Community College Athletics announces that Head Baseball Coach Ben Gravel will be departing the college to accept a new position at another institution.
Gravel guided the program to a 47-26 overall record and a 25-11 mark in Yankee Small College Conference play while building a culture centered on accountability, player development, and success both on the field and in the classroom.
In his inaugural season, Gravel led the Seawolves to a 23-13 record, landing the team the number one seed in playoffs, and a YSCC Championship appearance. The program continued its success during the 2025-26 season, finishing 24-13 overall and recording the program's longest winning streak in more than two decades. The Seawolves earned multiple conference and national weekly awards throughout the season while continuing to compete among the top teams in the YSCC.
Across his tenure, Gravel coached seven All-Conference selections, two USCAA All-Americans, seven Academic All-Americans, a YSCC Player of the Year, a YSCC Pitcher of the Year, and numerous conference and national award winners. His teams consistently demonstrated a commitment to excellence both competitively and academically.
Beyond the wins and accolades, Gravel was known for his emphasis on personal growth and development. He challenged his student-athletes to improve not only as baseball players, but as students and individuals, fostering an environment that prioritized accountability, hard work, and preparation for success beyond the game.
Prior to arriving at SMCC, Gravel gained coaching experience at Merrimack College and Saint Joseph's College of Maine where he showcased his ability to spot talent and develop players. His passion for the game and commitment to helping student-athletes reach their potential were evident throughout his time with the Seawolves.
"Ben has been an incredible leader for our baseball program and a coach who consistently prioritizes the growth and development of his student-athletes,” said Associate Dean of Athletics & Engagement Ethan Wells. “His impact extends far beyond the achievements on the diamond, helping shape young men of strong character while building a culture that reflects the values of the department. Ben's passion, professionalism, and commitment to the College will be missed. We wish him nothing but success as he begins an exciting new chapter!”
“It has been an incredible honor to coach this program and be a part of such a special community,” said Gravel. “I want to sincerely thank the players for their hard work, commitment, and making my time here so enjoyable. Watching them grow not only as athletes but as young men has been an incredibly rewarding part of this job. To my assistant coaches, thank you for your dedication, friendship, and countless hours of support for the players and program. Your passion and commitment have been integral to the success of the program. I am also deeply grateful to Ethan Wells, Matt Richards, and Brian Berthiaume for giving me the opportunity to be the Head Coach and for their support of myself and the baseball program throughout my time here. SMCC is a special place and I will always cherish my time here.”
SMCC Athletics thanks Coach Gravel for his leadership, dedication, and contributions to the department, campus, community, and baseball program and wishes him continued success as he begins this next chapter of his coaching career.
