Bio

Ethan Wells was named Associate Dean of Athletics & Engagement in April of 2026.

Wells was hired at SMCC in June of 2016 as Assistant Director of Athletics, was elevated to Associate Director of Athletics in January of 2022, and then to Interim Director of Athletics in December of 2024.

Coaching:
Wells served a two-year appointment (2016-17) as Head Golf Coach at the College, leading the Seawolves to consecutive Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) runner-up finishes before being named YSCC Coach of the Year in 2017. In November of 2017, Wells made the change to Head Women's Soccer Coach. Through eight seasons at the helm, Wells coached the Lady Seawolves to an overall mark of 61-31-14 and 24-14-9 in Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) action. As the winningest coach in program history, Wells captured conference titles in 2019 and 2025 and was named both YSCC and United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Div. 2 Coach of the Year in the same season ('19). Wells led SMCC to four USCAA National Tournament appearances (2018, 2019, 2022, 2025)—making a run to the national tournament Finals in 2022 (a program first). During his tenure, Wells produced 13 YSCC All-Conference selections, 14 USCAA All-American selections (seven first team), and 20 USCAA Academic All-Americans. Wells resigned from his post as Head Coach in November of 2025.

Other Duties:
Wells has served as an adjunct faculty professor in the Sport Management degree program since 2018. He also serves on the YSCC Executive Board as Vice President.

Prior to SMCC:
Wells worked at Post University as Assistant Sports Information Director and at ESPN as a Statistical Analyst covering college football and college basketball.

A New Hampshire native, Wells obtained a bachelor's degree in Sport Management from the University of New England (Biddeford, Maine) in 2013. He played four years as a member of the men's soccer team and served as captain of the Nor'easters his senior season. Following his undergraduate career, Wells served a two-year stint as the Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach at UNE. He went on to receive his Masters of Education degree in Athletic Administration, with a concentration in Intercollegiate Athletics from Endicott College (2016).

 

Wells resides in Gorham with his wife Jacqueline and daughter Capri.
