SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Athletic Department has announced the resignation of former Head Baseball Coach Nic Lops.
Lops was hired at SMCC to begin the 2021-22 season and, during his 3-year tenure, combined for a 74-40 record, 24-5 in conference. Lops helped the Seawolves to three consecutive Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) championships and was named YSCC Coach of the Year in each season. His teams produced 10 YSCC All-Conference selections to include two YSCC Players of the Year and one Pitcher of the Year.
Lops earned an at-large bid to the coveted United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Small College World Series in 2022, a feat that was accomplished just four times previous. Lops coached one player to two USCAA All-American selections and 10 others to 15 Academic All-American selections.
Coach Lops commented, “My three years at SMCC were nothing short of incredible. I am forever indebted to Matt Richards and Ethan Wells for hiring me to lead the baseball program. The relationships with my players as well as the thrill of competition are what I will miss the most. SMCC will always hold a special place in my heart.”
Associate Dean of Athletics and Alumni Affairs Matt Richards expressed, “I am extremely happy for Nic and his family in his next venture within athletics. Nic was an outstanding coach for us leading our baseball program at exceptional levels- levels that will certainly be hard to replace. I want to thank Coach Lops for everything and wish him the best in his next journey.”
An immediate search will be conducted by the department to fill the position.
