SOUTH PORTLAND, MAINE – Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball earned a 5-2 win over the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) in a conference matchup Friday at Graves Athletic Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Moose jumped ahead early, scoring a run in the first and another in the second to take a 2-0 lead. The Seawolves answered in the fourth when Noah Gaghan (Brunswick, Maine) singled home Alex Bartlett (Thomaston, Maine).
SMCC surged ahead in the fifth. Mattias Cobham (Saint John, Canada) reached on a drop third strike and came around to score on Dom Smith's (Biddeford, Maine) groundout. A wild pitch allowed Tyler Herkalo (Parkton, Md.) to cross the plate, making it 3-2.
The Seawolves added insurance in the sixth on a Cobham RBI single and again in the eighth when Quinntin Gillies (Oshawa, Ontario) scored on a passed ball.
On the mound, freshman Carter Collin (Winthrop, Maine) steadied SMCC with four scoreless innings of relief and four strikeouts to earn the win. Mitchel Violette closed the door in the ninth for the save.
