BRIDGTON, MAINE - Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball picked up an 8-3 road win over Bridgton Academy on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Seawolves struck first in the opening inning. Bryce Wilcox (Strong, Maine) worked a walk, advanced into scoring position, and came home on a sacrifice fly from Samuel Potié (Gatineau, Quebec) to make it 1-0.
SMCC added to its lead in the third inning when Tyler Herkalo (Parkton, Md.) reached and later scored on a Thomas Marcotte (New Bedford, Mass.) double lined into left field, extending the advantage to 2-0.
Michael Pierce (Greenfield, Mass.) kept Bridgton quiet through much of the game, working efficiently into the sixth inning before the hosts broke through. Bridgton used a pair of runs in the sixth to even the game at 2-2.
The Seawolves responded with a big seventh inning. Connor Boulette (Westbrook, Maine) sparked the rally with a walk and stolen base before Potié delivered an RBI single. Quinntin Gillies (Oshawa, Ontario) followed with a two-run single, giving SMCC a 5-2 lead.
SMCC continued to apply pressure late, adding insurance runs in the eighth and ninth innings. The Seawolves' aggressive baserunning proved to be a difference-maker, swiping eight bases on the day and consistently putting themselves in scoring position.
On the mound, Pierce earned the win after allowing just one earned run over 5.2 innings. Jacob Watkinson (Owls Head, Maine) delivered 1.2 innings of shutout relief, striking out three, while Garrett McLeod (Winterport, Maine) closed out the final frames to secure the victory.
