SOUTH PORTLAND, MAINE - Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball picked up a 6-2 victory over the University of Maine at Augusta on Wednesday afternoon at Graves Athletic Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Seawolves struck first in the opening frame, capitalizing on baserunning and defensive miscues. Tyler Herkalo (Parkton, Md.) reached after being hit by a pitch, stole second and third, and came around to score on an error to give SMCC a 1-0 lead.
SMCC added to its advantage in the second inning. Quinntin Gillies (Oshawa, Ontario) worked a walk and moved into scoring position before Noah Gaghan (Standish, Maine) brought him home on a fielder's choice to make it 2-0.
The third inning saw the Seawolves tally another pair of runs. Connor Boulette (Westbrook, Maine) reached and advanced into scoring position before Bryce Wilcox (Strong, Maine) delivered an RBI single. Thomas Marcotte (New Bedford, Mass.) followed with a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 4-0.
UMA broke through in the fourth inning, taking advantage of a pair of errors to cut into the deficit. The Moose added another run in the sixth to make it 4-2, but SMCC responded.
In the bottom of the sixth, Marcotte drew a walk and later came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Tristan Laplante (Durham, Maine), restoring a three-run cushion.
SMCC tacked on an insurance run in the seventh as Boulette reached and scored on a ground ball by Samuel Potié (Gatineau, Quebec) to make it 6-2.
On the mound, Cole Payne (Bangor, Maine) delivered a strong start, allowing just two runs (one earned) on five hits over six innings while working through traffic throughout the outing. Trent Collin (Readfield, Maine) shut the door in relief, tossing three scoreless innings to secure the save.
