SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men’s basketball team returns to The Hutchinson Union Building looking ahead to a 25-game schedule this 2021-22 season. The team will return four from the 2019-20 season when the SeaWolves recorded a 21-9 overall mark and a United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Tournament Appearance—their 13th in program history.
Returning for his 19th season is Head Coach Matt Richards who is working on a .639 win% and 327-185 overall record.
Associate Head Coach AJ Burton states, “The biggest thing that has stood out for us in the early beginnings has been the leadership from our returners. Anderson Kavutse, Ian Regan, Cameren Cousins, Zachary Mickle, and DeSean Cromwell have done a tremendous job leading by example and holding new guys accountable. We emphasize being a player-led program and our upperclassmen have run with it. Further, seeing how they have produced thus far shows us they are ready to make jumps in performance.”
Coach Burton adds, “We welcome many new players to the program. Jack Pyzynski who joined us during the COVID year has continuously made strides on both ends, especially as a shooter. Alexander Momo is another newcomer who brings an exciting new skill set and will be seen as a key contributor coming off the bench for us. Myles Brown and Bode Meader have been superb additions, doing a great job balancing two positions to include handling the ball in our offense. Luke Gabloff and David Mervilus come to the gym every day with great energy and will benefit from challenging our starters. Rounding out the first-year group is transfer Ethan Marshall and Tommy Martinotti who both offer skill sets that will be utilized in specific match ups.”
“Looking ahead at the Yankee Small College Conference—I’ve never seen a more balanced field. NHTI, Central Maine Community College, and Vermont Technical College all return key players from the 2019-20 season. Teams to keep an eye on will be the University of Maine at Augusta, Great Bay Community College, and Paul Smith’s College—all of which have improved depth and will undoubtedly be challengers to the league standings. Finally, and new to the conference this year, is Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. The Panthers are a well-coached team and have achieved success in recent years. It’s going to be a fun race to the finish.”
