SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's basketball team rolled to a 92–42 victory over Washington County Community College on Sunday afternoon at The HUB.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SMCC wasted no time. On the opening possession, Sam DeWitt (Hudson, N.H.) buried a three off a feed from Sean Bosia (Dracut, Mass.), setting the tone for the first half. Washington County briefly took a 5–3 lead, but the Seawolves immediately responded when Jace Bessey (Jay, Maine) entered and drilled a transition three to put SMCC back on top.
From there, the Seawolves' depth took over. Nathan Mugisha (Rwanda, East Africa) powered through the paint for multiple finishes, including a tip-in and a pair of strong drives. Ellis Macea (Lawrence, Mass.) added timely mid-range scoring, and Franck Moron (Billerica, Mass.) provided instant offense with a jumper and later a corner three as SMCC pushed ahead 35–22 at the break. Moron's triple with :04 left in the half capped a 12–2 run.
The second half saw the Seawolves with their foot still on the gas. A layup from Macea and a transition dunk from Bosia sparked a barrage of scoring, and moments later DeWitt found Bessey for a deep three to extend the lead to 48–22. Bosia followed with another steal and dunk as the Seawolves broke the game open.
Ebe Efosa-Aguobor (Lawrence, Mass.) flew in for multiple layups and a dunk during a personal 8-point stretch, Ben Mullett (Hudson, N.H.) converted inside twice including an assisted finish from Moron, and Braden Rodrigue (Winslow, Maine) knocked down a three and added two more baskets as SMCC past the 80-point mark.
The closing minutes featured strong contributions from the first-years: Billy Birks (Portland, Maine) scored in transition, Jeremy Therrien (Wells, Maine) added a driving layup, Andrew Marzoli (Berwick, Maine) converted inside and recorded a block, and Romain Muhirwa (Westbrook, Maine) sealed the afternoon with two late layups—including one off a Birks assist—to cap a 57-point second half.
