Road Trip: Seawolves Top UMF 79-70

FARMINGTON, Maine — The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's basketball team used an offensive burst and a standout scoring night from Chance Mercier (Ellsworth, Maine) to earn a 79–70 win over the University of Maine–Farmington on Sunday afternoon at Dearborn Gymnasium. The Seawolves improve to 6–3 overall and 2–3 in YSCC play. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

SMCC came out firing, opening with a steal from Sam DeWitt (Hudson, N.H.) that led to a transition finish by Sean Bosia (Dracut, Mass.). Moments later, Mercier added a drive to give SMCC an early 8–7 lead.

Mercier took over the offense late in the first half—scoring on drives, then burying a three at the 8:42 mark. A late jumper by Frank Moron (Billerica, Mass.) helped SMCC go into halftime ahead 38–31. 

The Seawolves opened the second half with a pair of layups and a dunk by Bosia, Mercier scored at the rim, Moron laced a three, and DeWitt knocked down a three to expand the lead to 66–48 at the 9:04 mark. UMF made a push behind outside shooting, trimming the margin to 75–54 with 5 minutes left.

Emil Hernandez (South Portland, ME) closed the door late with a layup in the final minute to secure the road victory.
