Martin and Magnant Receive YSCC Honors, SeaWolves Bounced In Semis

PORTSMOUTH, N.H.—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) softball team was eliminated in the semifinal round of the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) championship tournament on Saturday, May 5 downed by the Fighting Saints of the College of St. Joseph (Vt.) 7-1.

Prior to the game, first-year standout Meranda Martin (Richmond, Maine) was announced to the YSCC All-Conference team and skipper Ray Magnant received YSCC Coach of the Year honors for the second straight season.

It was sophomore Kristen Mackenzie (Seabrook, N.H.) who made the start in the circle for SMCC opposite CSJ's McKenzie Ebert.

Martin led off the game with a bunt single down the first base line before swiping her 43^rd bag of the year to get into scoring position. The speedster eventually crossed home plate on a fielding error by the Fighting Saints to produce SMCC's only run of the contest.

Mackenzie was responsible for three unearned runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth stemming from RBI singles to the outfield gaps.

Sophomore Sarah Guimond (East Waterboro, Maine) came on in the fourth to make her 12^th relief appearance of the season. Guimond allowed just one hit, a two-run homerun to Sierra Jaeger in the sixth that put the Fighting Saints up 7-1.

Ebert was credited the win as Mackenzie was charged the loss.

The Lady SeaWolves conclude their 2017-18 season at 20-15 overall, 5-3 in conference action.

The Fighting Saints were eventually defeated by NHTI in the title game.
