GAME ONE
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) softball closed out its Myrtle Beach trip with a 6-1 victory over Community College of Rhode Island on Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Seawolves broke through in the second inning, taking advantage of CCRI miscues to build an early lead. Taylor Swift (Keene, N.H.) reached on an error to begin the frame, and Ella Voth (Lacombe, Alberta, Canada) followed by reaching on another miscue. Swift later scored on a passed ball before Myranda Caddy (Lacombe, Alberta) dropped down a bunt single to plate Voth. Caddy eventually came around to score on another passed ball, giving SMCC a 3-0 advantage.
CCRI got on the board in the third inning, scoring once to trim the deficit to 3-1.
Southern Maine answered right back in the bottom half. Ariana Cross (Orrington, Maine) led off with a triple to right field and came home on a wild pitch. Jayden Tripp (Prospect, Maine) later scored on a passed ball to push the Seawolves in front 5-1.
SMCC added one more run in the fourth inning. Carly Youngblood (Tracy, New Brunswick) singled and stole third before Drea Rideout (Yarmouth, Maine) was hit by a pitch. Sloan Scotvold (Red Deer, Alberta, Canada) then brought home Youngblood on a fielder's choice to make it 6-1.
That was more than enough support for Scotvold in the circle, as the sophomore went the distance and allowed just three hits while keeping CCRI off the board over the final four innings.
