Seawolves Move On To The Next Round
Auburn, ME. The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team won in the first round of the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) tournament. The Seawolves beat the Knights of Vermont Technical College (VTC) by a score of 66-56. The Seawolves were able to get off to a hot start with a 31-18 half time lead. The Knights made a run in the second half cutting it to 7 with 1 minute left but the Lady Seawolves hit their free throws to seal the deal.
The Seawolves had a team effort crashing the boards as they out rebounded VTC 54 to 36. The Seawolves were led by freshman forward Nyalieb Deng (Portland, ME) who came up with a huge double double with 20 points on 8 of 16 shooting and 16 rebounds that included 9 on the offensive end. Deng also helped out on defense recording 4 blocks. Freshman point guard Tiana Burton (Brunswick, ME) controlled the offense with 15 points on 4 of 8 shooting that included 2 of 3 from behind the arc. Freshman forward Alicia Hoyt (Steep Falls, ME) chipped in with 14 points, 9 rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
SMCC improves to 17-8 overall and 11-4 conference play with the win in the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) tournament. The Seawolves will be back in action this Sunday February 17th as they will take on YSCC rival Central Maine Community College (CMCC) in the second round. Game time is scheduled for 2:00PM.
