Seawolves Squeak Past NHTI, Advance to YSCC Semifinals
South Portland - Trailing by three points, 58-55, with 1:10 seconds remaining in regulation Lady Seawolves' shooting guard Danielle McCusker (South Portland, ME) netted a shot from behind the arc to tie the game while teammate Esther Palmieri (South Portland, ME) simultaneously got fouled and sent to the free throw line for a one-and-one. Palmieri iced two free throws to put the Seawolves on top 60-58. The Lady Seawolves held the Lady Lynx of NHTI scoreless for the remainder of the contest and walked away with a 63-58 victory, allowing the Lady Seawolves to advance to the YSCC semifinals.
McCusker led the Seawolves with a game high 22 points and eight rebounds. Forward Nyalieb Deng (Portland, ME) chipped in with a huge double double scoring 13 points and grabbing 14 boards, including seven offensive. Maria Veino (Sanford, ME) also grabbed double digit rebounds, hauling in 11 to go along with five points.
The Lady Lynx were paced by center Allura LeBlanc who scored 17 points and grabbed a team high 14 rebounds. Point guard Sara Romano scored a team high 18 points to go along with eight assists. And shooting guard Danielle Kimball chipped in with 11 points.
With this win the Lady Seawolves advance to the conference semifinals on Saturday against the University of Maine - Augusta at home at 2pm.
