SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women’s basketball team returns to the floor looking ahead to a 23-game schedule this 2021-22 season. In their previous season (2019-20), the Lady SeaWolves matched a program-best 24 wins and earned a trip to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Tournament- their fifth appearance in six years.
The Lady SeaWolves open their regular season inside The Hutchinson Union Building on Oct. 31 in non-conference action with Villa Maria College. From there it’s Fisher College (NAIA Div. II), the Naval Academy Preparatory School, and the University of Maine at Fort Kent before beginning their Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) slate on a back-to-back at Paul Smith’s College (PSC) and new conference member Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences on Nov. 13-14. The month concludes with a home date against NJCAA-opponent Bristol Community College and a familiar foe in the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) at the Civic Center.
December features four home contests and one on the road against Maine-state rival and the reigning conference champion Mustangs from Central Maine Community College. SMCC returns from the break to meet the University of Connecticut at Avery Point in South Portland on Jan. 5 ahead of a two-game road trip at the Community College of Rhode Island and Great Bay Community College. The SeaWolves get PSC, ACPHS, and UMA for the second time over five days and hit the road again for NHTI and Navy Prep in the first week of February. SMCC will host Senior Day at The HUB against CMCC on Feb. 9 and then round out the regular season at Vermont Technical College on Feb. 18.
The 2022 season will showcase an eight-team YSCC postseason format. This year’s championship tournament will be held at NHTI on Feb. 19-20. The winner will receive an automatic bid to the USCAA National Tournament in Richmond, Va. Mar. 6-10.
Returning for her sixth season at the helm is Head Coach Katie Stannard—10 wins away from her 100th. Stannard has compiled a combined 90-27 overall record (.767 win%) and a 50-12 mark in conference action.
Coach Stannard commented, “I’m so excited to be back on the court with this amazing group of women. We have great leadership in our four returners Tara Flanders, Ashleigh Mathisen, Bailey Whitney, and Aija Andrews who have taken our first-years under their wing.” The SMCC women add a group of players that provide both depth at the post position headlined by Maggie Strohm and Maddy York, and guard duties backed by Hannah Richards, Kyla Greenleaf and Paige St. Pierre. Newcomer Shea Pickering projects to be a weapon beyond the arc, and Allexius Theberge, Jaycee Cole, Margaret O’Brien, and Mariah Parker will contribute to the team’s balanced approach on both ends of the floor. “We have a very talented class of first-years and I’m excited to unleash them to the conference!”
