Women’s Basketball Adds Lafrenaye and Suhr to Coaching Staff
SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Head Women’s Basketball Coach Katie Stannard has added two familiar faces to her coaching staff ahead of the 2022-23 season. Julianna Lafrenaye and Madeline Suhr join Patrick Haviland as Assistant Coaches effective immediately.
SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Head Women’s Basketball Coach Katie Stannard has added two familiar faces to her coaching staff ahead of the 2022-23 season. Julianna Lafrenaye and Madeline Suhr join Patrick Haviland as Assistant Coaches effective immediately.
Coach Stannard commented, “Dani and Vanese have had an incredible impact on me and our program over the last several years. They have been instrumental in our success; I personally learned so much from them and will forever be grateful for their partnership and friendship. They have helped me learn that loyalty and dedication are crucial components of a successful program and why I am so excited to welcome Julianna and Madeline to our coaching staff for the upcoming season!”
Lafrenaye is a 2020 graduate of SMCC and three-year contributor to the women’s basketball program under Coach Stannard. Lafrenaye served as a two-year captain and made two United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) national tournament appearances. She took on guard duties and was a part of the 2019 team that matched a program-best 24 wins.
Previous to joining the SeaWolves’ staff, Lafrenaye served as the Head Coach of the First Year girl’s basketball team at Portland High School, and as an assistant to the Junior Varsity and Varsity programs.
Lafrenaye earned her associate’s degree in Liberal Studies and went on to attend the University of Southern Maine where she is working toward her bachelor’s degree in Humanities, with a minor in Coaching. In addition to her role on the basketball floor, Lafrenaye works as a waitress in Portland.
Stannard commented, “Jules is and one of the best rebounders and defenders our program has ever seen. Moreover, a women I have been able to rely on since she stepped foot on campus. I am thrilled to be a part of her coaching journey and for our women to get the chance to learn from her. Jules will focus on recruiting and help organize player development on and off the floor!”
Suhr is a recent 2022 graduate of the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) where she achieved her bachelor’s degree in Applied Science. Suhr was a decorated member of the women’s basketball program at UMA, earning USCAA First-Team All-American recognition, voted a two-time YSCC First Team All-Conference selection, and YSCC Player of the Year in 2021-22.
Previous to joining the SeaWolves’ staff, Suhr did a coaching stint with the First Year girl’s basketball program at Brunswick High School. In addition to her role on the basketball floor, she works at Sebasco Harbor Resort.
Stannard reflected, “I have known Maddie since she attend the Bowdoin Camps as an eight-year-old. I watched her tremendous high school career and had the burden of coaching against her in college. As the reigning YSCC Player of the Year, I know she will have an immediate impact on our players— they were so excited to hear the news of her joining the team! Maddie will be responsible for our social media presence, post player development and some recruiting and scouting.”
Suhr expressed, “I’m so excited to continue my coaching career at SMCC! Getting to work with young women and offer support and encouragement is something I have always been passionate about. I can’t wait to get started with this coaching staff and team!”
