SARANAC LAKE, N.Y. — The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team picked up a strong non-conference victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating North Country Community College 62–54 at the Saunders Sports Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SMCC Jumped ahead on early baskets from Kylie Young (Westbrook, Maine) and Milo Seams (South Paris, Maine) to take a 14–11 lead after one.
North Country trimmed into the margin midway through the second, but Julia Reed (Gorham, Maine) repeatedly pushed the Seawolves forward—knocking down a three, assisting in transition, and scoring six straight during a late surge. Back-to-back plays from Mckenna Johnson (Gardiner, Maine) and a three from Katie Lozoraitis (Falmouth, Maine) sent SMCC into halftime up 30–23.
The third quarter swung between runs, but SMCC found answers every time the Saints threatened. Young buried a three, Johnson and Jade Trueman (Sanbornville, N.H.) scored through contact inside, and Reed closed the frame with two free throws to extend the lead to 45–38.
North Country made one final push to level the playing field 48–48 with six minutes remaining, but the Seawolves responded with their best stretch of the afternoon:
— Reed finished in traffic for the lead
— Johnson drilled a right-wing three
— Trueman delivered a key block
— Seams scored on a drive with 4:03 left
From there, SMCC locked in defensively. Reed added another late layup and Young finished the game at the line.
