FARMINGTON, Maine — The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team made multiple second-half pushes but came up short on the road, dropping a 76–66 non-conference decision to UMaine Farmington on Sunday evening at Dearborn Gymnasium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UMF opened the game on a 10–2 run behind paint scoring and extra chances on the glass. First-year guard Mckenna Johnson (Gardiner, Maine) steadied SMCC with a pair of trips to the line and a mid-range jumper, and Jade Trueman (Sanbornville, N.H.) added a strong finish to make it 14–10. Farmington closed the period with a late three from Halle Tripp to lead 20–14 after one.
Both teams traded baskets in the second quarter. Skyler Tinker (Trescott Twp., Maine) supplied 6 first-half points and work on the glass, while Johnson continued to attack downhill. SMCC trailed 32–26 at the break.
Johnson fueled a major surge in the third—posting 10 points in the frame, including back-to-back threes that pulled the deficit to 42–37. However, UMF countered with a scoring stretch sparked by Tripp and Lilly Gray, maintaining a 55–46 lead entering the fourth.
SMCC opened the final period with a burst: layups from Trueman, Darby Flanagan (Dresden, Maine), and Johnson trimmed the gap to 55–54. Julia Reed (Gorham, Maine) pushed SMCC ahead 58–57 with 4:23 left after a steal and transition finish.
But UMF answered with a decisive another run over the next three minutes, capitalizing on turnovers and second-chance opportunities. Despite a late Reed layup and strong interior play from Trueman, the Beavers held on down the stretch.
