STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — October 14, 2025 — The Southern Maine Community College golf program made history at the Penn State Blue Course this week, capturing two national championships at the 2025 USCAA Golf National Championships.
The SMCC men's golf team claimed the program's first-ever USCAA National Championship team title, while first-year standout Grace Thompson earned Individual National Champion honors in the women's field — marking one of the most successful days in SMCC Athletics history.
Seawolves Capture First National Team Title in Program History:
Over two days of competition (October 13–14), the Seawolves posted a team score of +34, finishing nine strokes ahead of second-place The Apprentice School (+43) and outpacing a 16-team national field.
Freshman Will Farschon led the charge for SMCC, finishing second individually at +1, just two strokes behind medalist D. Yinger (Penn State–York). Farschon's performance capped a season of accolades, following his sweep of YSCC Golfer of the Year, All-Conference, and All-Tournament honors earlier this month.
Joining him on the national stage were Chris Keene (+11), Dani Aguado (+12), Drew Goulet (+13), and Matt Quigley (+15) — a balanced team effort that pushed SMCC to its victory. Goulet's consistency this fall also earned him YSCC All-Conference and All-Tournament recognition.
A Historic Season for SMCC Golf:
This national championship marks the first-ever team title for SMCC Golf and the fourth overall USCAA National Championship in school history — joining softball's title earlier this spring, men's basketball in 2022 and Tommy Stirling's individual national championship, which came more than a decade ago.
Coaches Honored on the National Stage:
Head Coach Scott Nevers and Assistant Coach Seth Semmelrock were named the Coaching Staff of the Year, adding to a remarkable list of accolades for the SMCC leadership duo.
Earlier this month, Nevers also earned his second consecutive YSCC Coach of the Year Award, leading SMCC to victories in eight regular-season events before capturing both the YSCC Championship (October 5) and the USCAA National Championship (October 14).
"These are kids that wanted to play right away and get that tournament experience," said Head Coach Scott Nevers. "They've got the talent — that was never the question — but the biggest thing was buying into the mindset – need to believe a little more in themselves and that they can compete. They took that mindset and they ran with it."
Grace Thompson Crowned National Champion:
In addition to the men's team triumph, SMCC's Grace Thompson captured the USCAA Women's National Invitational Championship, emerging from a talented field to claim the top spot at Penn State Blue.
Thompson's victory marks SMCC's second individual national championship and underscores the program's growth.
