SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) announces that Garrett Lewellen has stepped down as Head Coach of the Women’s Volleyball program following a record-setting five-year tenure.
Lewellen led the Seawolves through a transformative era. In his final two seasons at the helm, he guided the Seawolves to back-to-back Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) Championships and consecutive berths to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Tournament.
The 2025 season saw SMCC defend its YSCC crown while also winning the conference regular season with an overall record of 16-3 and a flawless 10-0 in conference play. The Seawolves remained dominant throughout, capping off the campaign with a national tournament appearance. The team earned national and conference recognition throughout the year, including multiple Player of the Week honors and Academic All-American selections.
That success followed the 2024 season, in which the Seawolves posted an 18-4 overall record and an 11-1 YSCC mark. The team claimed its first-ever YSCC title and reached the USCAA National Tournament for the first time in school history. Lewellen was instrumental in that breakthrough, building a competitive and tight-knit roster full of ambition, skill, and team chemistry.
“We are extremely grateful for the dedication and impact Coach Lewellen has had on our volleyball program and athletic department as a whole,” said SMCC Athletic Director Ethan Wells. “His ability to build a championship culture while focusing on the personal and academic growth of his student-athletes has left a lasting legacy.”
Lewellen was recognized as YSCC Coach of the Year in 2021 and 2025 for his commitment to and development of the volleyball program at SMCC. His teams produced numerous All-Conference, All-American, and Academic All-American selections, while also earning multiple department honors, including SMCC’s Carroll Rines Sports Person of the Year and Leslie Barteaux Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Lewellen shared:
"I want to thank SMCC for the opportunity to coach the women’s volleyball team these past 5 years. It has been a great joy of mine to be part of these girls' lives and see how a team playing a sport can be used to grow us in life. Ethan Wells, Matt Richards and Brian Berthiaume have been wonderful to work for and with. Their support of the girls has helped make these athletes’ SMCC intercollegiate experience special. I will miss this place and these good people."
SMCC extends its deepest thanks to Coach Lewellen for his leadership, dedication, and the lasting impact he has made on the volleyball program, the student-athletes, and the entire campus community.
