Athletics Engagement and Academic Report: Spring 2025

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—At the conclusion of the semester, Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Interim Director of Athletics Ethan Wells published the findings of the semi-annual Spring 2025 Athletics Engagement and Academic Report. The report shows student-athlete GPAs and retention rates based on United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) normal progress rules for athletic participation eligibility—a higher threshold than those standards of the College.

Spring 2025

• Total student-athletes: 119
• Overall student-athlete GPA: 3.04 (.08 points better than spring 2024)
• Spring 2025-Fall 2025 USCAA retention rate: 90.96% (same as spring 2024-fall 2025)
• Student-athletes earning a 3.0 GPA or better: 68 (57% of total student-athletes)
• Student-athletes earning a 4.0 semester GPA: 7
• USCAA Academic All-Americans: 25 (3.5 GPA or better with 24+ credits)
• Best team GPA: women’s volleyball (3.45)
• 100% retention rates: softball, women’s golf, men’s basketball
• Leslie Barteaux Scholar Athletes of the Year (best GPAs with 36+ credits)
  • Sarah Wilkins (Softball): 3.94
  • Max Noto (Baseball): 3.78

In strategic review of the data Wells stated, “We set another department record this semester with a 3.04 GPA, the highest mark since tracking the data from spring 2014. Administrators and coaches take great pride in our student-athletes’ efforts in the classroom as well as on the playing surface. This level of academic achievement rounds out what it means to be a Seawolf, and I look forward to passing this tradition along to those joining us in the fall!”
