South Portland - In this afternoon's USCAA baseball action, the Seawolves edged out the Owls of UMPI by a lone run in each of the two games in the double header. The Seawolves prevailed 5-4 in game one and 3-2 in game two.
The Seawolves jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to runs by Daniel Kane (Portland, ME) and Tim Rodrigues (Barnstable, MA) but a monster third inning by the Owls found UMPI on top 4-2. Both teams were held scoreless in the fourth inning and the Seawolves kept the Owls quiet in the top of the fifth before they made a run in the bottom of the inning. With two outs and a runner on second right fielder Cam Brochu (Manchester, ME) smacked an RBI single to pull SMCC to within one. A double by third baseman Shawn Murphy (Poland, ME) put two Seawolves in scoring position and then Caleb Burpee (Kennebunk, ME) brought both runners home with a single to put SMCC back in the lead. Seawolves' pitcher Amos Herrin (Wilton, ME) gave up only one hit and struck out three Owls in the final two innings to solidify the 5-4 SM triumph.
After one inning of play in game two the Seawolves were sporting a 3-2 lead and after that defense prevailed with neither team scoring for the remainder of the game. Junior pitcher Nate Boyle (Windham, ME) secured the win for SMCC with his eight strikeout, seven hit performance from the mound. Caleb Chambers (Lebanon, ME), Brochu and Murphy each tallied runs for the Seawolves.
With these wins the Seawolves improve to 11-14 overall and will be back on the field on Tuesday at home against Northern Essex Community College at 3:30pm.
