SOUTH PORTLAND, MAINE — The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team erupted for 10 runs in the seventh inning to pull away from the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) for a 17-8 victory on Friday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SMCC got on the board early in the first inning, using a pair of sacrifice flies from Quinntin Gillies (Oshawa, Ontario) and Tristan Laplante (Durham, Maine) to take a 2-0 lead.
After CCRI chipped away and eventually tied the game, the Seawolves responded with a three-run third inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Mitchel Violette (Westbrook, Maine) and Connor Boulette (Westbrook, Maine) to regain control at 5-1.
CCRI continued to battle, including a solo home run in the fourth inning, and put together a four-run sixth to even the score at 6-6. The Knights then briefly took the lead in the seventh, making it 7-6.
The Seawolves exploded for 10 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, capitalizing on walks, errors, and timely hitting. Thomas Marcotte (New Bedford, Mass.) delivered a key two-run single in the frame, while Boulette and Laplante each drove in runs as SMCC surged ahead 16-7.
SMCC added another run in the eighth inning to cap the scoring and secure the 17-8 win.
