AUBURN, MAINE — Southern Maine Community College saw its season come to a close on Friday afternoon, falling to NHTI, 9-7, in the semifinal elimination game in the YSCC Playoffs hosted at Central Maine Community College.
NHTI built an early lead, scoring four runs in the first and adding five more over the next two innings to take a 9-3 advantage through three.
The Seawolves responded with by chipping away at the deficit across the final innings. Tristan Laplante (Durham, Maine) sparked the comeback effort with a triple and scored twice, while Thomas Marcotte (New Bedford, Mass.) drove in two runs on a 2-for-4 effort. Tyler Herkalo (Parkton, Md.) added two hits and three stolen bases as part of a five-steal team effort.
SMCC pulled within two late, plating runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, but could not complete the comeback.
Trent Collin (Readfield, Maine) provided a strong relief outing, tossing 5.2 innings and striking out four.
With the loss, the Seawolves conclude their season after a hard-fought playoff run.
SEASON IN REVIEW
Despite falling short in the postseason, the 2025-26 season marked one of the most successful campaigns for Southern Maine Community College Baseball in recent program history.
The Seawolves finished the year with a 24-13 overall record and a 13-7 mark in conference play, posting a .649 winning percentage while competing against a mix of conference, NJCAA, and NCAA opponents. The team's success was highlighted by a 13-game winning streak - the longest by the program in over 20 years of recorded data.
Offensively, SMCC produced - scoring 288 runs across 36 games while posting a .425 on-base percentage. The Seawolves also showcased aggressive baserunning, totaling 117 stolen bases on the season.
Individually, several Seawolves earned recognition for their performances:
- Bryce Wilcox and Tyler Herkalo were named YSCC All-Conference selections
- Thomas Marcotte earned YSCC Honorable Mention honors
- Tristan Laplante and Samuel Potié each earned YSCC Player of the Week recognition
- Garrett McLeod, Michael Pierce, and Cole Payne all collected their own USCAA Pitcher of the Week Accolades
Tyler Herkalo delivered a historic season on the basepaths, breaking the program's career stolen base record with 58, surpassing the previous mark of 49 set by Justin Colon (2021–2023). In just two seasons, Herkalo established himself as a key contributor, swiping 48 bases this season alone, nearly matching the previous career record in a single year.
On the mound, the Seawolves were led by Michael Pierce, who posted a 1.86 ERA across 48.1 innings, and Garrett McLeod, who added a 2.82 ERA in key outings. The pitching staff combined to hold opponents to a .229 batting average.
"I'm really proud of what this team accomplished" said Head Coach Ben Gravel. "The time and effort these guys have put in to make this season what it says a lot about who they are. The growth the players went through on the field, in the classroom, and most importantly as people is something we'll carry with us into next season."
With a strong foundation in place and momentum from a record-setting season, the Seawolves will look to build on their success heading into the 2026-27 campaign.
